let’s give back: Hockey Fights Domestic Violence

Came across this awesome idea courtesy of @wraparoundcurl: Hockey Fights Domestic Violence by nonmodernist

the plan:

my favorite player’s stats X a small dollar amount = monthly donations to a local domestic violence nonprofit

i picked jamie benn—because every time i watch him play he reminds me to be bigger, faster, better, and cuter than the competition.

then i picked the family place, a dallas nonprofit with an impressive array of programs and a 4-star rating on charity navigator.

  • for each goal he scores this season, i’ll donate $1.00
  • for each assist he’s credited with, i’ll donate $0.50
  • i’ll tally up his points at the 15th of each month and make my donation

jamie was one of the top ten scorers in the league last year, and i’m a grad student living on a very small stipend, so i’m scaling this realistically for my budget. i’m going month-by-month so that i can reassess regularly, see when i can give more, or scale back if i need to.

the dream:

i’d love your help!

here are two ways you can get involved:

  • match my donations! or give your own scaled amount! give directly to the family place or send them to me (message me to get my paypal info) and i’ll provide a receipt to show i made the donation
  • pick your own player, your own scale, and your own nonprofit! use the “hockey fights domestic violence” tag to share your fundraising efforts

So basically this is an awesome idea. Read the rest of her explanation here.  This is a great way to raise awareness about things that need to change in our society and in sporting culture in particular, while also creating a tangible benefit in the form of a donation.  Remember: to a charity that manages its assets appropriately, every little bit counts.  Just because you might not be able to make a huge donation doesn’t mean you haven’t made a difference.  So make your scale suitable for what you can afford at your own income level.

Me?  I’m going to pick Patric Hornqvist.  Patric already has 4 goals and 4 assists on the season and is looking like a great fit on a line with Sidney Crosby, and he has instantly become everyone’s favorite Jim Rutherford acquisition.  The scale sounds pretty good, but I can probably afford a little more.  I’ll give $2 per goal and $1 per assist.  Patric is a Penguin but I live in Boston, so a charity that directly benefits my community is REACH Massachusetts.  I will donate twice over the course of the regular season, once at the 41 game mark and once at the 82 game mark.

I’d also like to suggest that any good charity that provides protective and mental health services to marginalized groups would be an acceptable charity to use for this!

So hey, pick a player, and let’s get the word around.  Hope that tonight’s Pens-Nashville battle shows #72 on the better side of that trade.

hashtag fuck yeah help others!

I’m kinda behind on the emotional status of the Penguins due to, among other things, catastrophic emotions and sedation, but I’ll be back on the horse soon.  Staring into the sun.
